IDENTICAL PIECES
A bulk mailing MUST be identical. That means color, weight, and text. Even a poor cut can affect the weight.

ENOUGH PIECES
We need 10 – 20 piece overrun to cover the full mailing.

FOLD ON BOTTOM AND TAB ON TOP
If the opening is at the bottom it is no longer mailable.

28lb PAPER MINIMUM WEIGHT – USPS REQUIREMENT
20lb paper is too thin, so be careful when purchasing.

ADDRESS & BARCODE SPACE
An easy safeguard is leave the lower right hand corner of your mail piece, approximately 3 3/4″ from the right edge x 2 1/8″ up from the bottom edge, blank to avoid any imprint issues. Send us your design before printing so we can approve for postal qualifications.

ASPECT RATIO
Measure your mail piece. Length divided by height must be more than 1.3 or less then 2.5.

POSTCARD/SELF MAILER SIZE
Keep postcard and self-mailer designs at a maximum size of 6 1/8″ high x 11 1/2″ wide to qualify for letter size postage rates instead of the more expensive flat size postage rates.

SELF-MAILER TRI FOLD
The address panel must now be the middle panel and must be minimum 28lb paper.

INSERTS
It’s often advantageous, not a requirement, to have inserts 1/2″ smaller than the horizontal dimensions and 1/2″ smaller than the vertical dimensions of the envelope. This will help assure ease of inserting with the machine and can help avoid additional costs for hand inserting.

ENVELOPE FLAP
Be sure that the envelope flap is a commercial style to meet machine inserting requirements. The envelope flap should be no longer than 1 3/4″ and 1 1/2″ is preferred.

MAILING LIST DATA
Formats: Provide data in Excel, ASCII comma or tab delimited or fixed field format.

Keep first name, last name, address 1, address 2, city , state and zip code in separate fields so the data can be more easily worked with and duplicates found.

The preferred way to submit jobs to the shop is via our PDF2u driver. The driver can be downloaded by clicking the “print driver” button located above in our services section, or by clicking HERE. Once the driver is installed on your computer, when you have a job ready to submit, you will chose to print the document and chose our print driver, instead of a regular printer. The file will be submitted via the web to us and be received as a PDF.

We can also receive files via our email – cservice@northwesternprinters.com or brought in on a CD or External Jump Drive. If choosing to bring in the raw file, be sure to convert all artwork into vector or outlines when possible, and embed or include any fonts, images and artwork used in the document to help prevent any missing links.

BLEED & TRIM EXAMPLE

WHAT TO CHECK BEFORE YOU SUBMIT YOUR JOB

What is RGB?

RBG color is comprised of the primary colors of light. Red, Green, and Blue.

This is why when using cameras and scanners, your images are in RGB and show up more vibrantly on computer monitors and TV’s.

RGB

What is CMYK?

CMYK represents the primary colors of pigment: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black.

These four inks are used to create all full color projects on the press in four-color process printing.

CMYK

PMS (Spot) Color

These are more commonly know as Pantone colors.

swatch_book

Pantone colors are specific colors
picked from a color swatch book,
or mixed for an exact color match
to print in a single run and not
multiple passes.

More Color Info

It is possible to make colors using RGB that cannot be made using CMYK. So, it is usually advised when submitting artwork for a project, that the document be built with a CMYK color palette, images as well. By making this adjustment ahead of time, it will help avoid dramatic color changes in your project during final printing.

Document Size

This is the size of the file you are submitting, before any finishing work is done. An example would be a brochure, that when finished would be approximately 3.625 x 8.5 after folding, but would still have a document size of 8.5 x 11.

Bleed Allowance

Printing that extends to the finished size or edge of the document.
It’s preferred to extend this artwork an 1/8″ past the finished document size, so when trimming is complete it will have a nice clean edge. Reference the image above for a visual. ↑

Image Quality

To ensure the best quality, it is recommended when submitting files and graphics for printing, that they be a minimum 300 dpi or better. When the quality drops below that, then pictures and graphics become grainy, rough and pixelated. The larger the image, the more noticeable the quality. The designers on staff are always available to help check document specs if there are ever any concerns.
